The colleges' Year in Review

Lehigh’s colleges look back at the highlights of 2014

2014 was a year marked by exciting accomplishments and memorable moments at Lehigh. Beyond the big news listed here, our four colleges share a few of their most notable stories below:

The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science

The $4.5 million Health Research Hub (HRH) in Iacocca Hall on the Mountaintop Campus hosted a full year of interdisciplinary research. HRH’s open, 4,500-square-foot space invites collaboration and allows for a “single mission and space.”

Bryan Berger, assistant professor of chemical engineering, is working to combat an emerging drug-resistant bacteria that causes a high rate of lung infections in hospitals.

The National Science Foundation “CyberSEES” program awarded Lehigh a nearly $1 million grant to optimize ocean wave energy for conversion into usable electricity. The grant includes funding to write a curriculum for high school students to take part in the BIOS program and to develop an exhibit about capturing ocean-wave energy for the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown.

The College of Arts and Sciences

USA Today ranked Lehigh’s Department of Journalism and Communication the 7th best in the United States.

Niki Patel, doctoral candidate in organic chemistry, was selected to present her research at a symposium of the American Chemical Society.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) awarded Lehigh a five-year, $1.9 million grant to enhance undergraduate science education.

The College of Education

Lehigh’s College of Education was ranked 42nd out of 245 education colleges in the 2015 U.S. News and World Report Graduate School Rankings.

Ed Shapiro, professor of school psychology, and Minyi Dennis, assistant professor of special education, won a $1.08 million Response to Intervention (RTI) grant from the U.S. Department of Special Education. This highly competitive five-year grant will allow COE to train 16 to 18 of its educational specialist/school psychology scholars in how to put the RTI model in place in middle schools and high schools.

The Master’s in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) voted to approve the accreditation of Lehigh’s M.Ed. in Counseling & Human Services.

The College of Business and Economics

Georgette Chapman Phillips was appointed the Kevin L. and Lisa A. Clayton Dean of the College of Business and Economics.

James B. Adamson visited Lehigh’s College of Business and Economics as a CEO-In-Residence, met with students and faculty from all of the CBE’s business disciplines, and led dialogue on diversity and inclusion in global business.
