Another Mountaintop summer

The fourth summer of Lehigh’s Mountaintop initiative has officially begun.

Teams arrived as early as 7:45 a.m. on May 24 to claim their work spaces in Bays C2 and C3 on the Mountaintop Campus. Team members arranged tables, chairs and large whiteboards, some immediately scrawling questions across them, a starting point for a summer of creative inquiry. Brightly colored signs emblazoned with project names designate the spaces, which will host collaboration, imagination and discovery for the next ten weeks.

A total of 134 students will participate in 22 stand-alone Mountaintop projects and in Launch Bay C, the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation’s multi-track student idea accelerator. This year, seven students from the Pratt Institute of Design in New York will join Lehigh students on six different projects. Ten projects include faculty and staff mentors from multiple colleges. This year’s projects include:

• Using 3D printing techniques in structural concrete

• Building an atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactor and developing ideas for filling the gaps in understanding the process of ALD

• Exploring the genetics of complex cognitive processes

• Using data in a scholarly study of sports to examine themes such as injury and violence, attributes of superior athletic performance and victory, and patterns of human physiological, cognitive, social and cultural evolution

• Considering what modern biomedical technologies can be used to target foot disorders and how product design can implement solutions without sacrificing user perception satisfaction

• Addressing the issue of environmental sustainability in the Lehigh Valley through a website that will allow individuals to connect and share, rather than generate waste

• Adapting and developing technology that enables schools and other educational organizations to collect, analyze and utilize data in new and unexpected ways

• Exploring issues related to civic data, asset mapping and community engagement with technology

• Creating an educational platform that imbues players with the ability to discern science from pseudoscience without them even being aware that the learning is taking place

‘I like the creative aspect of this’

Jay Donas, a Ph.D. candidate in history participating in a project called “Asa Packer: An Extraordinary Man in Extraordinary Times,” had heard about the Mountaintop experience before signing up this year.

“A fellow grad student did a project here two summers ago and he loved it,” said Donas. “People that have done projects here want other people to do projects and be engaged at Mountaintop, so it’s seems really interesting and exciting.”

Through their project, the team hopes to tell the story of Lehigh founder Asa Packer, even in the absence of many sources. One of Donas’ teammates, Nia Baker ’19, said she is looking forward to the research experience. 

“I think it will be a good experience to learn more about Lehigh and about research techniques,” said Baker, who is studying sociology and women, gender and sexuality studies at Lehigh. On opening day, she and her teammates were deciding where to start.

Kenji Harada ’16, who studied computer science and international relations at Lehigh, and Lucas Van Dyke ’18, a mechanical engineering student, sat together in their space, anticipating the summer ahead. In their project, “Urban Planning and Transportation at Lehigh,” Harada, Van Dyke and their teammates will attempt to develop a plan for a smarter, more environmentally friendly transportation system for Lehigh.

Harada plans to use his computer science background to set up a database to determine the efficiency of different transportation approaches and “hopefully find different problem areas that we can solve in the future.” He likes the open-ended aspect of Mountaintop, he said.

“We take it wherever we want, wherever we can. Maybe this project will end in failure, maybe it’ll turn into something great and we’ll redefine the way our campus travels. But really there’s no pressure, and I feel like there’s a lot more freedom to take this project towards the right direction,” said Hamada.

“I really liked it because it’s our own project,” said Van Dyke, who also looks forward to working with students from different academic backgrounds. “Yes, Professor [Bill] Best is going to be helping us, but it’s just us five working for ten weeks on our own thing, approaching it however we want. ... I like the creative aspect of this.”

‘An element of unpredictability’

The transformation of Bays C2 and C3 is just the beginning of the Mountaintop experience for students and mentors alike.  

“Last night, the big bays were empty shells with lots of marker boards and piles of old furniture. Today, teams start moving in with their ideas and aspirations,” said Alan Snyder, vice president and associate provost for research and graduate studies. “Before long, a walk through the building will be a tour through work in progress. This morning, even as people are dragging tables around and setting up their spaces, I'm hearing exchange of ideas among neighbors. By design, there's an element of unpredictability here. One thing in which I'm confident based on past experience is that collaborations and lines of inquiry that start this summer, for both faculty and students, will persist long after.”
