Called to help in Haiti

On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The quake killed more than 300,000 people and devastated the country’s already poor infrastructure.

The United States and other nations pledged $5.3 billion to help rebuild Haiti, but much of this money remains unspent and more than 1 million Haitian people are still homeless. In the months since the disaster, news coverage of the situation has diminished and attention has shifted elsewhere.

But not everyone has forgotten Haiti’s tragedy. In August, Amanda Carr traveled to Port au Prince with a team of volunteers from Lifechurch, in Allentown, Pa. Carr is a Ph.D. student in the counseling psychology program in the College of Education.

She spent 10 days counseling the children who live at Rescue Children Orphanage, now known as Mercy Ministry Home. She will return to Haiti this Christmas to follow up with the children. Learn more about Carr’s experience helping the children in Haiti by watching the accompanying video.
