Cultivating an attitude of gratitude

What am I thankful for?

I’m thankful that Lehigh University came through “Superstorm Sandy” strong, despite the mighty blow (literally and figuratively) that she delivered. Our campus might not ever look quite the same, but Sandy’s winds brought out the best in our students, faculty, and staff as they rose to the challenge. Not only did everyone stay safe, but our community has rallied since the storm to provide comfort and resources to many far and wide who suffered losses.

I’m thankful for our volunteers. Just a few weeks ago, the Lehigh University Alumni Association released its first Volunteer Impact Report, which you can find online [hyperlink to report]. Did you know that more than 2,140 volunteers gave about 70,000 hours of service to Lehigh during the 2011-2012 fiscal year? If these were paid employees, we would be talking about $1.5 million in salary to cover their hard work. Now that’s something to be grateful for. We couldn’t do it without you!

And I would be remiss if I didn’t say I’m thankful that Lehigh beat Lafayette! Lehigh spirit and pride was flowing from our students, alumni, friends and especially our 50-Game Club members (check out the great photo). Seeing our team win on the field was tremendous, as was witnessing our alumni, students, and friends stepping up to once again win the Lehigh-Lafayette Challenge. Lafayette did not go down without a fight—especially since they were on their own turf—but we prevailed by a final score of 2,748 points to their 2,592. Thank you to everyone who made a gift to Lehigh online or making a text gift by phone. Your support will go a long way toward helping our students enjoy an outstanding Lehigh experience. We look forward to taking Lafayette on again in the future, particularly on November 22, 2014, when The Rivalry will be played at Yankee Stadium in honor of its 150th anniversary. Mark your calendars!

In short, I’m thankful to be part of the Lehigh family. We at the Alumni Association are privileged to work with you to broaden and strengthen our network, and I hope you will take advantage of all we have to offer.

Go Lehigh!

Yours in Brown and White,

RWW
