In the News: Zirkel takes on ‘self-plagiarism’

The idea of self-plagiarism “on first impression sounds like an oxymoron,” Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law, writes in an opinion article titled A Study of Self-Plagiarism appearing in Inside Higher Ed.

As a matter of intellectual ownership, how could one plagiarize one’s own ideas? he asks.

But upon closer examination, the question poses an ethical dilemma, he concludes. Zirkel dove into the issue after discovering two articles—each co-authored by the same professor—that were surprisingly similar, yet neither cited the other.
