ZeeK making the arts fun for children

Zoellner Arts Center is pleased to welcome ZeeK! into its second year with new features --10% off of family meals at several area restaurants before or after a ZeeK! performance and a special ZeeK! members-only section at every performance.
ZeeK! is designed to introduce children aged five through 12 to the best of the arts, which, in 2002-2003, includes orchestra, jazz and wind concerts, as well as musical theater and gallery exhibits.
We all know the importance of the arts in children’s early academic and social development, notes Elizabeth Scofield, Zoellner’s managing director. But we also know that the arts—music, dance, theater and all the rest—give the deepest meaning to life, even to children. The arts have a way of gently wafting over you; before you know it, you’re part of them, and they’re part of you—no matter how old you are. A ZeeK! parent said it perfectly, ‘We realized that we needed to expose our children to different things because even we don’t know what they enjoy.
At Zoellner we want to do everything we can to make our programs readily accessible to children and families, Scofield continues. ZeeK! is simply a new way of making the arts fun for children and affordable for their parents.
For an annual membership fee of $10, a ZeeK! member is entitled to the following benefits: five concert performances (selected from a list of 10); invitations to Lehigh University Art Galleries kids’ events; a chance to meet the performers; after-show treats; ArtsPal (mini-guide to the performances); a special ZeeK! souvenir; membership card; free ticket exchange; 10% discount at Perkins, the Red Robin, Oasis and the Teapot family restaurants; and a special ZeeK! members-only section for performances.
Performance choices include two Lehigh University Philharmonic Orchestra performances of The Tempest and Other Tales and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony; two Lehigh University Fusion Fest performances featuring Brazilian Jazz and Music of Weather Report, the famous 70s group; The Music Man; Eugene Albulescu, piano, playing Liszt, Balakirev, Franck and Sibelius; two Lehigh Wind Ensemble performances featuring festive Spanish music in Fiesta! and Civil War music; the East Winds Quintet playing music by Hindemith, Payne and Beethoven; and a Jazz faculty performance.
(A maximum of two adults may accompany a child; all children must be accompanied by an adult; the accompanying adult will receive a ticket at the reduced price of $4.00.)
