Social Innovation & Enterprise in the Lehigh Valley | SprintX

Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

Social innovation is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress.

Social entrepreneurship is the use of the techniques by start up companies and other entrepreneurs to develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, or environmental issues.

The Lehigh Valley has a thriving, diverse economy and is a desirable place for entrepreneurs to come to start or grow their businesses. It wasn’t always like this. 30 years ago, the economy was dependent on two industries that were in their period of decline – steel & trucks. It took a great deal of innovative thinking and collaboration to create an infrastructure and culture to support & promote entrepreneurship and move toward a more diverse economy. Ben Franklin Technology Partners led the way as a collaborative effort between the state and private investors. Local economic development agencies followed in their support of entrepreneurship.

In this SprintX, we will explore in more detail where successful social innovation has happened and is currently happening in the Lehigh Valley. How did this social innovation happen? What are the elements of successful, impactful collaboration?

We will also explore the connection between Entrepreneurship and Social Change. Is Entrepreneurship purely a business phenomenon? Innovation happens in all sectors; for-profit, non-profit and government. How can we spread the spirit of Entrepreneurship into all aspects of our community to create opportunities for cross-collaboration and joint problem solving at a more systemic level?

The Lehigh Valley Social Impact Center is a co-working and event space where social entrepreneurs and other local changemakers can come together to discuss topics of importance to the community and seek the resources needed to move from ideas to action. We are currently located in the Pi (Partnership for Innovation) space at 520 Evans Street in South Bethlehem. We are planning to move to a new space early in the new year.
