Friday, Sept. 9: “Engineering Success: The Importance of Mentoring”

The P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and the student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers present a panel discussion moderated by Mary Fernandez, chair of MentorNet and executive director of distributed computing research at AT&T Labs.

The event begins at 4 p.m. in STEPS 101. It is part of the campus-wide celebration of the 40th anniversary of the admission of women undergraduate students to Lehigh.

Saturday, Sept. 10: Interfaith community service event

The Association of Student Alumni is organizing this event to commemorate the 12 Lehigh alumni and parents of alumni killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Burnside Plantation of Historic Bethlehem.

Sunday, Sept. 11: Candlelight memorial service

The office of the university chaplain will lead a service in honor of the 12 Lehigh victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

The event begins at 8 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church.

Monday, Sept. 12: A commemoration of Sept. 11, 2001

Events will occur throughout the day in Lamberton Hall. CNN’s original coverage of the terrorist attacks will be shown from 8 a.m. until noon. Former Lehigh employee Kim Plyler will give a lecture at 12:15 p.m. titled “An Eyewitness Account of the Pentagon Tragedy.” At 4 p.m., Vic Comras, author of the book Flawed Democracy and a former member of the UN’s Al-Qaeda Monitoring Group, will give a presentation titled “Can the United Nations Stop Terrorism?”

Tuesday, Sept. 13: “Is Sharia the Solution? The Promises and Problematics of Divine Law Today”

The office of interdisciplinary programs presents the 2011 Kenner Lecture by Khaled M. Abou El Fadl, chair of the Islamic Studies Program at UCLA and professor of Islamic law at the UCLA School of Law.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Hall.

Wednesday, Sept. 14: “Understanding Surfaces and Interfaces in Energy Storage and Conversion Systems”

The department of chemical engineering presents an address by Meilin Liu, the Regents’ Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Co-Director of the Center for Innovative Fuel Cell and Battery Technologies at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The event begins at 2:30 in Room B-023 of Iacocca Hall.

Thursday, Sept. 15: “New Topologically Ordered Phases of Condensed Matter”

The department of physics presents an address by Joel Moore, a theoretical condensed matter physicist at the University of California-Berkeley and also in the Materials Sciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 316 of Lewis Lab.

Thursday, Sept. 15: “The Vision of an Art Critic”

The Humanities Center presents the Visions Lecture by Dore Ashton, art critic, author and professor of art history at the Cooper Union in New York.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in the Scheler Humanities Forum, Room 200 of Linderman Library. It is cosponsored by the Lehigh University Art Galleries and the department of art, architecture and design.
