Events to give presidential candidates’ health care proposals a checkup
Are you still unsure of what the presidential candidates’ health care proposals will mean for you? Lehigh’s Health, Medicine and Society program will host two free, public events on Oct. 21 and Oct. 30 to help voters better understand the proposed health care plans of candidates Barack Obama and John McCain.
The first event, “Health Politics and the 2008 Presidential Campaign,” will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 4:10 p.m. in Linderman Library, Room 200. Michael S. Sparer, director of the executive masters in public health program and professor of healthy policy and management at Columbia University will be the featured speaker.
Sparer is an expert on the politics of health care and public insurance programs, including Medicare and Medicaid. He will discuss the large numbers of uninsured and under-insured people in the United States, the impact of the lack of insurance, options to aid the uninsured, and the divergent proposals offered by Barack Obama and John McCain.
The event is co-sponsored by the departments of political science, economics and English, the Health Care Initiative, the Humanities Center, the women’s studies program and the Student Coalition for Public Health.
Lehigh will also host “McCain’s and Obama’s Health Care Proposals: A Panel Discussion,” on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Whitaker 303. The public is invited to come to learn about each candidate’s proposed changes for the health care system and share their questions and comments.
The forum will include presentations by Edo Banach, associate general council for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Chad Meyerhoefer, assistant professor of economics, and Laura Olson, professor of political science.
The event is co-sponsored by the departments of political science, economics, English and the women’s studies program.
