Around the world in seven days
Lehigh’s seventh annual International Week, which runs Nov. 9-15 and features 32 events, promises once again to be one of the biggest celebrations of its kind at American colleges and universities.
More than 30 campus groups, including all four of Lehigh’s colleges, are participating in this year’s “Celebration of Diversity,” which is being presented by the Global Union.
“Starting at noon every day, there will be something significant going on,” says Bill Hunter, director of the Global Union.
International Week is held on campuses across America, says Hunter. Lehigh has consistently ranked in the top five in terms of the numbers of events held during the week. In 2005 and 2006, the university ranked first in the category.
Key events include a videoconference with French university students, scheduled for noon on Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Fairchild-Martindale Library, and an all-day meeting with Germany’s ambassador to the UN to be held in New York City on Friday, Nov. 14.
The annual “Fusion Festival,” scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. in Lamberton Hall on Friday, Nov. 14, will feature skits, dancing, music and a fashion show, all presented by students from Lehigh’s Asian clubs and Black Student Union.
Seven films will be shown during the week. “The Counterfeiters,” a German film that won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Academy Awards, will be screened at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, in Room 102 of Maginnes Hall. “Two Million Minutes,” a documentary about high school education in the U.S., India and China, will be shown at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Wood Dining Room.
Brown bag discussion lunches—featuring a series of Lehigh faculty involved with international projects and also a Fulbright student from Peru—will be held each weekday at noon in the MRC Lounge of Iacocca Hall.
The Comparative and International Education (CIE) program, the Study Abroad office, COE Diversity Committee, Office of International Programs (COE) and the Global Citizenship program are co-sponsoring a photo contest and exhibition that will be held all day throughout International Week in the lobby of Iacocca Hall. Lehigh students, faculty and staff are invited to submit 1-2 photos that showcase what they believe captures international education.
To view the photos and vote, go online. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 5:00 p.m. in Packard Lab 101 at the screening of the movie Two Million Minutes” and will receive a single-lens reflex camera.
International Week will open at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, with international dance music broadcast by the campus radio station, WLVR-FM, and will conclude at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Zoellner Arts Center with a concert titled “Fusion Fest: Jazz from Brazil.”
