Friday, Feb. 26: “Progress Engendered by Collapses of Record Setting Structures: Malpasset Dam, World Trade Center Towers and KB Bridge in Palau”

The Fazlur Rahman Khan Lecture Series http://www.lehigh.edu/frkseries features Zdenek P. Bazant, McCormick Institute Professor and W.P. Murphy Professor at Northwestern University. The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium. It is sponsored by the department of civil and environmental engineering and the department of art and architecture.

Monday, March 1: “Women’s Empowerment: The Nigerian Perspective”

The Lehigh /United Nations Partnership presents an address by Sister Rosemary Ukata, a member of the HHCJ Center for Women Studies and Intervention in Abuja, Nigeria, who will discuss her work promoting empowerment for Nigerian women. The event is also sponsored by the Women’s Center, the sociology and anthropology department, and the Millennium Development Goals Club. It begins at 4 p.m. in Room 112 of Maginnes Hall.

Tuesday, March 2: “The Google Settlement—Implications for Libraries, Authors and the Public”

The Scheler Humanities Forum presents a talk by Kathy Olson, associate professor of journalism and communication, on the proposed settlement of the publishing industry’s lawsuit against Google and the implications of that settlement for international copyright, fair use and privacy rights. The event begins at noon in Room 200 of Linderman Library. It is cosponsored with the department of journalism and communication and Friends of the Lehigh Libraries. Refreshments will be provided, and bag lunches are welcome.

Tuesday, March 2: “Towards High-throughput Phenotyping of Biological Systems—What Can Bioimage Informatics and Data Mining Do for Biology”

The seminar series of the computer science and engineering department features Dr. Fuhui Long, a staff scientist at the Janelia Farm Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The event begins at 4 p.m. in Room 466 of Packard Lab.

The seminar series of the department of materials science and engineering and the Center for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology feature Ying Mei of the department of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 203 of Whitaker Lab.

Wednesday, March 3: “Science to Technology: New Model of Catalytic Etching Leads to Invention of a Novel and Revolutionary Approach to Catalyst Synthesis”

The colloquium series of the department of chemical engineering features Prof. Jonathan Phillips of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of New Mexico. The event begins at 2:30 in Room B013 of Iacocca Hall.

Wednesday, March 3: “Sustainable Development and the Role of the UN”

The Lehigh /United Nations Partnership presents an address by Patricia Chaves of Costa Rica. A senior sustainable development officer at the UN, Chaves will discuss the role the UN plays in making sustainable development viable around the world. The event is also sponsored by the Global Citizenship Program, the Martindale Center, SSD, the Microfinance Club, the Millennium Development Goals Club and the Lawyers Without Borders Club. It begins at 4 p.m. in Room 151 of the Rauch Business Center.

Thursday, March 4: “The Three Amigos: A Friendship Worth Preserving?”

The Canadian Studies Institute of the Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise presents an address by Anne McLellan, former deputy prime minister, minister of public safety and emergency preparedness, minister of health, minister of justice, attorney general, minister of natural resources and federal interlocutor for metis and non-status Indians, all in Canada.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 091 of the Rauch Business Center. It is cosponsored by the Eco Society and the department of international relations.

Thursday, March 4: “Femtosecond Electron Diffraction: Atomic Level ‘Movies’ of Dynamics in the Condensed Phase”

The colloquium series of the physics department features Maher Harb, an NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) postdoctoral fellow in the Atomic Physics Department at Lund University in Sweden. The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 316 of Lewis Lab.
