Monday, March 29: “Blasphemous Art in a Secular Age”

The Spring Lecture Series on Religion and the Visual Arts features S. Brent Rodriquez Plate, visiting associate professor of religious studies at Hamilton College.

The event begins at 4:15 p.m. in the Lower Level Gallery of the Zoellner Arts Center. It is cosponsored by the religion studies department, the English department, the philosophy department, the Humanities Center, ArtsLehigh and the Lehigh University Art Galleries.
Tuesday, March 30: “A School for Hope: Educating AIDS Orphans”

Marie da Silva, founder and president of the Jacaranda School for AIDS orphans in Malawi, will discuss her work in the southeastern African nation. The Jacaranda School is home to more than 200 children.

The event begins at 4 p.m. in Room 480 of Maginnes Hall. It is sponsored by the Global Union and is part of its social entrepreneurship speaker series.

Wednesday, March 31: “Faculty Show: Art, Architecture and Design”

Projects and new ideas by faculty will be on display in the Zoellner Arts Center’s Main Gallery daily from March 31 through May 28. The exhibit is sponsored by the Zoellner Arts Center and the Lehigh University Art Galleries.

Wednesday, March 31: “Life in Iran: A Lehigh Perspective”

The Iranian community of Lehigh will show the documentary film Rick Steves’ Iran, which looks at Iran from an American’s perspective. A discussion will follow, and food will be served.

The event, which is sponsored by the Global Union, begins at 4 p.m. in the Global Union lounge.

Wednesday, March 31: “Engineering Living Tissue from Scratch”

Mona Marei, head of the tissue-engineering lab at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Unviersity of Alexandria in Egypt, will discuss regenerative therapy, a method of tissue restoration. Marei collaborates with Prof. Himanshu Jain and other researchers at Lehigh. Her seminar is sponsored by the International Materials Institute for New Functionalities in Glass and also by the bioengineering program and the department of materials science and engineering.

The event begins at 4 p.m. in Room 207 of Whitaker Lab.

Wednesday, March 31: “Mircea Eliade: Art, Religion and the Perception of the Sacred”

The Spring Lecture Series on Religion and the Visual Arts features Bryan Rennie, the Vira I. Heinz Professor of Religion at Westminster College.

The event begins at 4:15 p.m. in Room 102 of Maginnes Hall. It is cosponsored by the religion studies department, the English department, the philosophy department, the Humanities Center, ArtsLehigh and the Lehigh University Art Galleries.

Wednesday, March 31: “The New Global Christianity: How Should We Rethink Theology”

The Connell Lecture Series of the religion studies department features Philip Jenkins, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of history and religious studies at Penn State University and distinguished senior fellow at the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University. Jenkins books include The New Faces of Christianity: Believing the Bible in the Global South; God's Continent: Christianity, Islam and Europe's Religious Crisis; and The Lost History of Christianity: The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia--and How It Died.

The event begins at 8 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium.
