Friday & Saturday, Oct. 23-24: Music’s effect on body and soul

Lehigh University's Choral Arts, directed by Steven Sametz, presents a concert titled Soul of the World. The chorus’s 200 singers will perform Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis and Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace), as well as the area premiere of Sametz's Music's Music. The concert will feature soprano Margaret Hanegraaf, baritone Brian Ming Chu and mezzo-soprano Sage Lutton, this year's Finkel Artist-in-Residence at Lehigh.

The concert begins each night at 8 in the Zoellner Arts Center’s Baker Hall. For ticket information, call 610-758-2787 or visit the Zoellner Arts Center website.

A free public lecture beginning at 7 p.m. will precede each concert. Gordon Bearn, professor of philosophy at Lehigh, and Micah Sadigh, professor of psychology at Cedar Crest College, will discuss music's effect on body, brain and soul.

Tuesday, Oct. 27: The Failing Surge: Iraq 2010

Frank Gunter, associate professor of economics and senior civilian economics advisor to the Multi-National Corps-Iraq for two years, will talk about the future of the Iraqi economy and the prospect that unemployment, instability and corruption could jeopardize political and security progress. Chaim Kaufmann, associate professor of international relations, will lead a discussion after Gunter's presentation.

The event, which is sponsored by the Martindale Center for the Study of Private Enterprise in the College of Business and Economics, will begin at 4 p.m. in Maginnes 102.

Tuesday, Oct. 27: Assessing Lincoln’s Political Genius

Craig Symonds, professor emeritus of American history at the U.S. Naval Academy, will deliver the 2009 Harmon Lecture, titled Assessing Lincoln’s Political Genius. Symonds won the 2009 Lincoln Prize for his book Lincoln and His Admirals, which was published in 2008. He will discuss Lincoln’s management of the slavery question.

The lecture begins at 8 p.m. in the Rauch Business Center’s Perella Auditorium. A book-signing will follow.

Wednesday, Oct. 28: The Anthropology of Bethlehem’s Future

Anthropologist Cathy Stanton, author of The Lowell Experiment: Public History in a Postindustrial City, will lead a discussion of Bethlehem, its deindustrialization and its future.

The event, which is sponsored by the Southside Initiative, will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Room 303 of the University Center. Lunch will be provided.

Thursday, Oct. 29: Self-phase Modulation and Stimulated Raman Scattering in Semiconductor Waveguides

Aleksandr Ryasnyanskiy, a research scientist in the department of physics, will discuss the results of nonlinear propagation experiments in semiconductor waveguides, including the enhancement of third-order nonlinearities due to light propagation in a slow mode regime.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Room 316 of Lewis Lab.

Thursday, Oct. 29: Ari Folman and ‘Waltz with Bashir’

The film Waltz with Bashir, which examines war and its effects on individuals and nations, will be shown. Afterwards, Ari Folman, who directed and produced the film, will lead a discussion. In 2009, Waltz with Bashirwon the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the Zoellner Arts Center. It is sponsored by the Philip and Muriel Berman Center for Jewish Studies, the LU Art Galleries and the Humanities Center.
