The department of earth and environmental science presents a seminar by Alessandro Forte, professor of earth and atmosphere sciences at the University of Quebec at Montreal.

The event begins at noon in Room 101 of the STEPS building.

Friday, Oct. 1: “Interior Point Methods for Protein Image Alignment”

The department of industrial and systems engineering presents an address by Dr. Florian Potra of the University of Maryland.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. in Room 451 of Mohler Laboratory.

Monday, Oct. 4: “Advances in Document Recognition Systems”

The department of computer science and engineering presents an address by Dr. Venu Govindaraju of the University of Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo).

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Packard Lab 416.

Monday, Oct. 4: “Kabul: Foreign Aid Development and Insecurity”

The Center for Global Islamic Studies presents an address by Nandini Deo, assistant professor of political science. She will report on her August visit to Kabul, Afghanistan.

The event begins at 4:15 p.m. in Room 200 of Linderman Library.

Thursday, Oct. 7: Gruhn Speaker Series: Steven K. Kreider '79

The Gruhn Speaker Series of the College of Business and Economics presents an address by Steven K. Kreider, a fixed-income investment manager with Western Asset, a firm that manages $500 billion in assets for institutional clients. Kreider played eight seasons in the National Football League and is one of only two alumni to have played in the Super Bowl.

The event begins at 4:10 p.m. in Baker Hall of the Zoellner Arts Center.

Saturday, Oct. 9: Memorial Service for Prof. James Hobbs

The university chaplain’s office will hold a memorial service for James Hobbs, who died Sept. 13. Hobbs was the Frank L. Magee Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Business Administration in the College of Business and Economics (CBE) and former associate dean in the CBE and in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The service begins at 10:30 a.m. in Packer Memorial Church.
