CBE expands international offerings for graduate students
In order to provide students with a more dynamic global experience, the College of Business and Economics has expanded its portfolio of international experiences for students enrolled in graduate business programs.
As a part of this expansion, the CBE recently sent a Lehigh delegation to Athens, Greece. This new immersion experience provided insight into the debt crises occurring in Europe and how businesses are responding to financial challenges. Twelve students and four faculty members participated.
Our experience in Greece was eye-opening,” said Andrew Ward, associate dean for graduate programs in the business college. “Even in the midst of a financial crisis, the people were open, friendly, and eager to chat with our students. It was incredibly moving.
“This trip was a real enriching experience in that we met people from all fields and social status,” said Zhiqi Wang, a native of China who was one of seven international students on the trip. “I would recommend this program to anyone.”
The nine-day excursion had students visiting multiple businesses, including the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Valef Yachts, and the Hellenic Bank Association (HBA). During the HBA visit, Christos Gortsos, secretary general of the HBA, discussed the ongoing developments in the European banking system.
Lehigh students also had the opportunity to explore the history of Athens, visiting the Panathenaic Stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were held, as well as several other historical sites including the Parthenon and Greece’s National Archeological Museum. Attendees were briefed on social sharing tools in order to document their experience. Additionally, participants shared their experiences on the Lehigh MBA Global Experience website.
“Our trip to Greece was able to provide us first hand insight into the social and economic challenges the country faces, which are difficult to fully understand and comprehend when only reading media headlines,” blogged MBA student, Joshua Roche.
In addition to the Greece trip, the CBE has coordinated upcoming trips to the United Kingdom, France, China, and a new trip to Chile and Argentina. Several of the trips are done in collaboration with the University of Nottingham in the UK with whom Lehigh has partnered with for four years on international experiences for Lehigh and Nottingham students.
