Celebrating our students

The Lehigh University Honors Convocation held March 30 recognized more than 550 juniors and seniors for their academic achievements. The students being honored were those having achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.6 or are recipients of academic awards.

President Alice P. Gast welcomed students and their parents to this opportunity to celebrate the impressive accomplishments of our undergraduate students. “Sheer talent is only part of the equation,” she said. “The honorees have turned promise and potential into achievement.”

Defining moments

A student from each of the three undergraduate colleges provided remarks that highlighted personal experiences that will forever define each of them.

Jena Viviano ‘12, a finance and marketing double major in the College of Business and Economics, shared her abroad and campus experiences – ones that she considers strong influences in the person she has become. Outside of the classroom, she credits, “the encouragement and mentoring by faculty members and alumni, and leadership opportunities provided by Associate Dean Katrina Zalatan, to be invaluable experiences in my personal and professional development. “

Victoria Hermann ‘12, a double major in international relations and art history in the College of Arts and Sciences described her unique and varied experiences and recognized the important influence of faculty mentoring.

Megan Colville ‘12, an industrial engineering and political science major and student in the Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts & Sciences (IDEAS) honors program noted the importance of the Lehigh network.

Special CBE Recognition

Directly following the University Honors Convocation, the honorees and families from the College of Business and Economics were invited to a College Honors Reception in Rauch Business Center.

Associate Dean Katrina Zalatan welcomed students, families and faculty to recognize department and major’s academic prize winners and those honored with CBE and Martindale Center awards. Serving as emcee for the ceremony, Dean Zalatan invited 60 students to step up to the podium to receive their individual awards from chairs of the CBE departments and programs. “It seems fitting,” she said, “to extend the university celebration to celebrate the accomplishments of our CBE students.”
