Council for Equity and Community announces vacancies

The Council for Equity and Community (CEC) is currently accepting nominations for the following vacancies: one undergraduate student, two faculty members, and one exempt staff person.

The undergraduate position is open to all students for a 1- or 2-year term (depending on class status) beginning in June 2010. The faculty and exempt staff positions are for 3-year terms, also beginning in June 2010.

“We’re really pleased to be recruiting new membership to the council from among the students, staff, and faculty,” says MJ Bishop, associate professor and coordinator of the College of Education’s Teaching, Learning, and Technology Program, who serves as CEC co-chair. “It is the responsibility of every member of the Lehigh community to help us move the university toward realizing its vision for equity and community.”

“We want to gratefully acknowledge the council members whose terms of service are expiring on May 31,” adds Carolina Hernandez, director of community service and CEC co-chair. “They all contributed greatly to our cause, and we look forward to working with them as allies of the CEC.”

The departing council members are:

• Timothy Gardner, director, LGBTQA Services
• Roy Gruver, director, Technology Management
• Jackie Krasas, associate professor, sociology, and director, Women’s Studies
• Ted Morgan, professor, political science
• Kirsten Muser, senior undergraduate student
• Henry Odi, executive director, Academic Outreach

Convened in March 2008, the CEC serves as an advisory group to President Alice P. Gast and senior leadership. It is a 16-member body comprising undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty.

A representative and empowered group, the council was charged by Gast with facilitating and sustaining the next generation of diversity and equity initiatives on campus. To learn more about the CEC and its work, go to the “Achieving Equity and Community at Lehigh” Web site.

Nominations will be accepted until Wednesday, April 28, and should be submitted via e-mail to cec@lehigh.edu. Please include a brief summary of why the individual is suited for the position. Self-nominations are also welcomed.

For the undergraduate student vacancy, the CEC will make the final selection from among the nominations received after interviewing the finalists. For the faculty vacancies, one position will be elected from among the nominees by the faculty at large and one position will be appointed by Gast. For the exempt staff vacancy, the individual will be elected from among the nominees by the staff at large.
