In the News: Gunter op-ed questions stimulus effectiveness

Examining the economic policies followed by the United Kingdom during the 1981 recession may be instructional for the United States today, Frank Gunter, associate professor of economics, writes in an op-ed published by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Instead of increasing government spending and reducing taxes, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher followed the “counterintuitive” advice of her senior economic adviser, Alan Walters, by raising taxes and shrinking the budget deficit during the recession, Gunter writes.
