In the News: Gunter warns that popular vote bill would increase fraud

Legislation aimed at guaranteeing that the winner of the popular vote in U.S. presidential elections wins the electoral college would increase electoral fraud and lead to more recounts and lawsuits, Frank Gunter, associate professor of economics, writes in an op-ed published by The Patriot-News of Harrisburg, Pa.

“The National Popular Vote bill attempts to ensure that the presidency goes to the candidate who receives the most popular votes,” Gunter writes.

“But it will foster electoral fraud where it is least likely to be uncovered and encourage multiple recounts and lawsuits. The bill will distort the popular vote and further undermine the public’s confidence in the fairness of national elections.”
