In the News: Zirkel examines teacher tenure

Abolishing teacher tenure is not the panacea that its proponents contend it is, writes Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law, in an op-ed on the Washington Post education blog, The Answer Sheet.

Zirkel concludes that it is the lore surrounding teacher tenure—and not the laws governing it—that are the problem. Correcting the commonly held “myths” about teacher tenure is the first step toward addressing issues such as incompetent teachers and noncompetitive student achievement in the global marketplace, Zirkel writes.
