Speaker will encourage Lehigh community to stand up, not just stand by

Brett Sokolow, the managing partner of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management who spoke at Lehigh two years ago, returns to campus to deliver an interactive presentation entitled “Don’t Stand By … Stand Up!” on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in Packard Auditorium.
His lecture, which is sponsored by the Women’s Center and the Office of Student Activities, is free and open to the public. Sokolow’s talk is designed to give members of the Lehigh community the tools and confidence to intervene—rather than just be a bystander—when they see a situation that they believe could escalate.
“Brett Sokolow drew an impressive crowd the last time he visited Lehigh and brings an interactive mode of discussion to the topic of bystander intervention. He encourages all members of the campus to consider the context, impact, and consequences of choosing to look the other way,” says Rita Jones, director of the Women’s Center. “Certainly, Sokolow will address the importance of external factors, including one’s personal safety, and he will provide ways to stand up. In addition to the follow-up conversation we’re hosting on September 11, we hope other groups and organizations at Lehigh will have similar conversations about being pro-active rather than reactive.”
Sokolow, a legal specialist in campus safety and sexual misconduct, manages the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM), a national multidisciplinary risk management consulting firm. Through NCHERM, Sokolow has consulted with over 1,300 colleges, universities, schools and military institutions in the United States and Canada. He has provided strategic prevention programs to students at more than 1,800 college and university campuses, including Lehigh.
He is an expert in preventive law and risk management. He has 11 years of experience helping clients to enhance the safety and security of their communities by strategically addressing high-risk health and safety issues.
The Women’s Center, located in UC 207, will host a follow-up brown bag discussion to Sokolow’s lecture entitled “How Do I Stand Up?” on Friday, September 11 from noon to 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
