Friday, November 2, 2012 11:00 a.m.

Power continues to be restored to locations on and off-campus, and the university is continuing to make progress toward normal operations.

The Residential Services office will be contacting students in halls or chapter houses by email to let them know when it is safe for them to return. Questions may also be directed to that office at 610-758-3500.

Students in off-campus neighborhoods can check to see if power has been restored to their residences by either contacting their landlord about their specific address, or checking the Outage Center on the PPL website. Please note that the account number or the phone number of the primary account holder is needed to obtain this information.

Classes will resume on Monday, and all academic deadlines (tests, projects, etc.) that were previously scheduled for next week will continue as scheduled. Four o’clocks scheduled for the week beginning November 5th will take place as previously scheduled. An email from the Provost’s office on academic deadlines was sent directly to students last night.

We recognize that many homes in the Northeast remain without power and we hope those students and their families are remaining safe. Students who continue to have difficulty coming back to Lehigh are asked to contact their instructors to discuss their particular situation.

Transportation is running on a normal schedule and libraries are open. Dining services are available at several locations throughout campus, including the Fud Truk, which will be on campus beginning 11 a.m. Saturday. Several events, activities and athletic competitions will be taking place this weekend. More details can be found on the university calendar.

Thursday, November 1, 2012  5:30 p.m.

Power has been fully restored to Rathbone Hall and to more on-campus residences. The Residential Services office will be contacting students in these halls or chapter houses by email to let them know when it is safe for them to return.

Power continues to be restored sporadically in the off-campus areas surrounding Lehigh and to areas of campus that have been without service for several days. We realize that many of our off-campus students are still without power and heat at this time. The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 30s this evening, and the university is offering these students the option of spending the night in the University Center emergency shelter.

We will accept Lehigh students at the shelter until it reaches capacity. Students can register at the Information Desk before 8:30 this evening with a Lehigh student ID. Questions can be directed to the UC main desk at 610-758-4160.

To check if power has been restored to their off-campus residences, students should contact their landlord about their specific address, or check the Outage Center on the PPL website.

Note that either the account number or the phone number of the primary account holder is needed to obtain this information.

Off campus neighborhoods will be patrolled by our Lehigh University Police Department Community Police officers, who will go door to door to verify the security of homes that are still without power. We have added additional officers and security personnel to heighten patrol and response capabilities on campus as well.

The university is continuing to make progress toward normal operations.  Rathbone Dining Hall will begin serving on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on a regular schedule after that. The FUD truck will also be in various locations on campus beginning Saturday at 11 a.m. Please check www.lehighdining.com for more details.

WEATHER EMERGENCY UPDATE
Thursday, November 1, 2012   10:45 a.m.

A significant amount of power has been restored to the Lehigh campus and we are making progress towards normal operations.  All roads have been cleared of fallen debris from Monday night’s storm, and safety concerns have been addressed.

Classes will resume on Monday, and all academic deadlines (tests, projects, etc.) that were previously scheduled for next week will continue as scheduled. Four o’clocks scheduled for the week beginning November 5th will take place as previously scheduled.  Students will be notified of the dates for the four o’clocks that were scheduled for the week of October 29th through November 2nd.

We are working with faculty to resolve scheduling issues, and more detail on academic decisions will be conveyed to the campus community in an email from the Provost’s office later today.

Many residence halls and chapter houses will be opening, although there are still some affected by the power outage.  Students should not assume that they can access their buildings until each building has stable power and is fully assessed for safety.  An email will be sent directly to on-campus students regarding the status of their specific residence hall or sorority or fraternity later this morning. Questions and concerns can be directed to Residential Services at 610-758-3500.

WEATHER EMERGENCY UPDATE
Wednesday, October 31, 2012  11:45 a.m.

Power to some of the Lehigh campus was restored late Tuesday and we are continuing to work with our power provider, PPL, to monitor repairs and the timing of the restoration process. This is complicated by the fact that the Lehigh campuses are served by different power sources. Additionally, the process of bringing buildings back to power takes several hours as systems become fully functional and facilities personnel inspect buildings to make sure they are safe.

The Lehigh Valley area was hit very hard by Hurricane Sandy, and hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses and institutions lost power. As of Wednesday morning, more than 200,000 homes in this area are still without power.

We are continuing to deal with a challenging situation and we’ve received tremendous cooperation from students and their families, as well as staff and faculty. We are pleased to report that there were no injuries or incidents, and that the campus remains safe. Crisis and operations teams continue to address the situation around the clock, and our campus police, residence life, residence services, dining hall, and facilities personnel will be on duty throughout the outage.

We have also added additional officers and security personnel to heighten patrol and response capabilities.

We are continuing our efforts to clear the campus of downed limbs and all downed power lines have been addressed. We urge  anyone walking on campus to use extreme caution when walking on campus.

Earlier, we informed the campus community that classes are cancelled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and that the regular class schedule will resume on Monday, November 5th. Please check  www.lehigh.edu for updates.

We also encouraged any student who can travel home safely to do so, and to contact their families to let them know they planned on leaving campus. We are continuing to provide food and shelter for the students who remained on campus, including several graduate students and their families who live in Saucon Village.

Below is updated information on various student services:

DINING:  The Cort Dining Room will remain open to serve students,  including off-campus students and residents of Saucon Village. Students are only required to show a Lehigh student ID. Hours for Wednesday will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  for brunch and 4:30 to 6 p.m. for dinner.

Since the Cort Dining Room is continuing to serve meals, we will not be distributing Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) today in the Windish Hall parking lot.

HEALTH CENTER: The Center will reopen at 1 p.m. today and will be open until 5 p.m.  Students with a medical emergency after hours can reach the clinical staff by calling the Campus Police at 610-758-4200.

TRANSPORTATION: No buses will be running on Wednesday.

PARKING: Students who moved their cars into parking garages and onto the Mountaintop lots do NOT have to remove them today. The cars can remain in the lots until 5 p.m. Sunday.

BUILDING ACCESS: All academic buildings are closed to anyone but those with key or swipe card access to those buildings.

We will continue to provide updates at lehigh.edu. Please check Lehigh email regularly for further information.  Updates will also be posted at 610-758-NEWS (610-758-6397) and on the university’s Facebook page at facebook.com/lehighu and on Twitter @LehighUNews.

A call center will be open Wednesday for anyone who would like to speak with a Lehigh representative. Please call 610-758-1000.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we deal with this challenging situation.
