Sutherland recognized for distinguished service in supply chain/logistics

Joel Sutherland, managing director of Lehigh University’s Center for Value Chain Research, will receive the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) 2009 Distinguished Service Award on Sept. 21 in Chicago.
It is the highest honor given by the international association, which represents 9,000 members spanning 63 countries.
CSCMP President and CEO Rick Blasgen said that Sutherland’s career has been defined by innovation and inspiration.
“From his executive beginnings at Denso, where he mastered Toyota Production System/Lean principles, to his visionary leadership in outsourced logistics with CSX and Transplace, to his current role at Lehigh University, Joel has dedicated his career to creating innovative techniques, processes, and solutions to improve supply chain efficiency and effectiveness,” said Blasgen.
“He is also an inspirational leader who believes in leadership by example and has greatly contributed to raising awareness of the supply chain management profession around the world.”
Sutherland joined Lehigh University in 2006 and, since then, has served as the Center for Value Chain Research’s key representative to the business community. He has helped build awareness and expand membership of the center, a highly regarded joint venture between the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and the College of Business and Economics.
Lehigh was recently named as one to nation’s premier supply chain programs by AMR Research. Due in large part to the Center for Value Chain Research, Lehigh was also been recognized by Inbound Logistics as one of 25 top schools in the nation for MBA seekers, professionals and distance learners.
Sutherland has a long and distinguished career in the international supply chain and logistics field. He received the Professional Achievement Award from Logistics Management Magazine and was recognized as one of the Top 20 Logistics Executives by CLO Magazine and the Logistics & Supply Chain Forum.
Sutherland is the 44th person to earn CSCMP’s Distinguished Service Award, which was established by the association in 1965.
