Three undergraduate students in the College of Business and Economics had the chance last summer to live and work in Europe as the latest scholars in a program endowed 19 years ago by CBE alumnus Arthur C. Tauck Jr. ’53.
Jeremy Bailey and Paul Ciavardelli, both accounting majors, interned for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Ireland and the Czech Republic respectively, while Katelyn Cooper, a double major in finance and marketing, interned in Belgium at LMS International.
The Tauck Scholars program has enabled 62 students to have international working experiences since 1995. The competitive program, which is open to rising seniors, gives students an advantage as they prepare to enter a job market that values a global perspective.
The program made it possible for Bailey to spend last summer in the asset management department of PwC’s Dublin office. He participated in new employee training related to standards, policies and procedures, and served on a team responsible for preparing and conducting a client audit.
“I started with 40 other Irish interns—I was the only American there,” says Bailey. “The experience exceeded any of the goals I could have set for myself. I built relationships with numerous managers, partners and fellow interns in the Dublin office, and I hope to eventually return as a full-time employee.”
A ‘reassuring’ sense of independence
Ciavardelli interned for PwC in Prague as part of the Lehigh in Prague program. His experience included planning activities for upcoming client engagements, but his schedule made it possible to travel on weekends to Berlin and Amsterdam.
“I traveled to three major European cities in three different countries and it was absolutely amazing,” he says. “Because I was so far from home, I learned that I can do things on my own. This sense of independence was very reassuring seeing as I will have to start to do things on my own after graduation this upcoming year.”
Cooper interned in Belgium at LMS, an engineering firm that is a world leader for acoustic troubleshooting software. She worked in the Test Marketing Department, preparing advertisement budgets and reviewing website analytics for a newly released product.
“The environment at LMS was very different from a typical internship experience,” says Cooper. “My coworkers spoke Dutch, French, German, English, Italian and even Japanese. I think that the biggest takeaway from this experience was that we are all still students and every day is a new opportunity to learn. Finally, no matter what language people speak, a smile is universal.”
In addition to working, Cooper traveled to Amsterdam, London, Paris, Bruges and Barcelona and met other groups of Lehigh students.
Tom Hyclak, dean of the College of Business and Economics, says the Tauck Scholars Program is one of many opportunities the college offers to students to help them prepare for an increasingly global economy.
“Preparing our students for success extends far beyond the classrooms in the Rauch Business Center,” says Hyclak. “The Tauck Scholarship provides one of many international experiences available to our students, and we are grateful to Arthur Tauck for his support.”
The annual Tauck Scholars Luncheon will be held this year on Friday, Sept. 27. Tauck himself is planning to attend.
The deadline to apply for a summer 2014 scholarship is Nov. 12.
