Two myths undermine the fight against global corruption

The debunking of two myths would help fight the corruption that is hindering economic recovery in Haiti, Afghanistan and other countries recovering from disasters or struggling with armed conflict, says Frank Gunter, associate professor of economics.

Those myths are that corruption is a cultural phenomenon and that it can be defeated with well-publicized arrests.

Gunter stated his case May 6 in an op-ed in The Christian Science Monitor. A retired colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, Gunter has worked as a tsunami aid coordinator in Thailand and as an economic adviser in Iraq.
