Susan Werner will perform songs from The Gospel Truth on Oct. 30.

Singer-songwriter Susan Werner will present selections from her socially conscious, contemporary gospel album “The Gospel Truth” through a performance, discussion, and Q&A on October 30 at 4:45 p.m. at Zoellner Arts Center Room 145.

The event, presented by the Religion Studies Department, is free and open to members of the Lehigh University community. Only 100 seats are available for the performance.

Werner has become one of the defining artists of the folk music genre. She’s released seven albums of music described as diverse, fresh and compelling. Her most recent project, “The Gospel Truth,” explores the role of the church in America today and incorporates a range of musical styles. These “hymns for the spiritually ambivalent” challenge and affirm at the same time. They capture a variety of voices, from faithful and traditional to the critical and even the unconvinced.

“Susan asks hard and honest questions, and she doesn’t duck the issues,” says Ben Wright, professor and department chair of religion studies. “Anyone who has an interest in the role religion plays in contemporary America will find this interesting.”

The performance is co-sponsored by the Department of Music, ArtsLehigh, the Chaplain’s Office, the Humanities Center, and South Mountain College.
